Electric Cloud, VMware Join Hands

Integration between lab and test management tools slated for year’s end

November 28, 2007 —  It seems as if everyone plus his dog is trying to get on the virtualization bandwagon. But virtualization is indeed changing the way businesses look at their IT investments, and test infrastructure is one of its prime use cases.

Electric Cloud is seizing an opportunity to make its software production management tool set more attractive, by integrating its ElectricCommander with EMC’s VMware Lab Manager. An update to ElectricCommander that is expected by year’s end will deliver the integration features, designed to help customers build self-service labs without burdening IT operations, explained Electric Cloud CEO Mike Maciag.

In this scenario, the virtual testbed’s machines are created and managed by VMware Lab Manager, while ElectricCommander handles the higher-order automation of the test cycle. What formerly required a mass of spaghetti scripts and expert attention, noted Maciag, will become a push-button process. The hope is that by making testing less of a hassle, customers will test earlier and more frequently throughout the cycle and thereby see better code go into production.

The obvious upfront savings are the reduced cost of test and QA infrastructure and the resources needed to maintain meaningful testbeds, said Maciag. But another benefit, he added, is the ability to replicate testbeds days or even months after the fact with a few mouse clicks.
