IBM Playing With Watchfire

Big Blue integrates app security tool into Rational

July 30, 2007 —
IBM has added some fire to its application security grill with the July completion of its purchase of Waltham, Mass.-based Watchfire. The former company was perhaps best known for its Web application security tool, now offered as IBM Rational AppScan. IBM will integrate its Rational software quality management tools with Watchfire’s security and compliance testing services.

Company officials explained that Watchfire also complements IBM Tivoli access, identity and compliance management software offerings as well as the work of IBM Internet Security Systems, by extending security and compliance testing as an integrated element of the application development life cycle.

“Watchfire’s technology will help our customers address online security and compliance management requirements early in the software development process—before their applications go live,” said Danny Sabbah, general manager of IBM Rational.

Dave Locke, director of offerings marketing with IBM, gave an example of future integration, where AppScan test results might be automatically reported into Rational ClearQuest, IBM’s tool for managing enhancement requests and defects. He said that though there are very few concrete plans as of yet, the company would like to add integration capabilities with the Rational RequisitePro requirements manager, which will be refitted to incorporate accessibility and security requirements supported in AppScan.

Locke confirmed that the Watchfire brand would be retired. The terms of IBM’s acquisition were not disclosed.
