Backbase Dials AJAX In to iPhones

August 2, 2007 —  In an attempt to jump on the “Jesus phone” bandwagon, Backbase, which calls itself “the AJAX company,” has announced that its software suite will support Apple’s iPhone.

This simply means that Backbase’s products now work with Safari 3.0, the built-in browser of the iPhone. Backbase officials also said the company plans to create widgets and components designed specifically for iPhone, although Apple does not appear to have any plans to support third-party content on the device itself.

Michel Gerin, vice president of marketing for Backbase, explained that the company has been getting a lot of requests to support mobile phones. Though Gerin said that Backbase had met with Apple about supplying the AJAX capabilities for iPhones, Apple has made no official mention of Backbase in regard to application development for the handset.

Instead, Apple officials have spoken in generic terms, noting that developers can write Web applications with AJAX, which the phone consumes as it would other Web content.

“Developers and users alike are going to be very surprised and pleased at how great these applications look and work on iPhone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in mid-June. “Our innovative approach, using Web 2.0-based standards, lets developers create amazing new applications while keeping the iPhone secure and reliable.”
