Sun Fires Up JavaFX Compiler

July 23, 2007 —
Sun Microsystems on Friday opened the curtains on a new open source project dedicated to building a compiler for JavaFX Script. The Web scripting language, which Sun introduced in May at JavaOne, is Sun's answer to Adobe Systems' Apollo and Microsoft's Silverlight. According to Sun, the company has already produced a compiler for the language, and the existing code is now available under GPLv2 at openjfx.dev.java.net for developers to play with and modify as they see fit. The release of the compiler code is accompanied by additional plug-ins for NetBeans that bring the scripting language into Sun's flagship IDE. These plug-ins are some of the first development tools to arrive for the new language.
