Microsoft to Offer Code Protection, Validation

July 16, 2007 —
Microsoft is repackaging code obfuscation and license management technology that it acquired from Secured Dimensions. On July 10, at the Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver, it announced that a new suite of products called Software Licensing and Protection Services (SLP Services) will become available in October.

The first of three products included in the suite is the Code Protector SDK. Customers can use the SDK to obfuscate code and mark licensable entities. A version will be included in Visual Studio 2008. Another, Software Licensing and Protection Server, allows ISVs to host their own server and create licenses for their products.

Microsoft will host an online version called SLP Online Services. Starting in October, MSDN Premium subscribers will be given the option of a free subscription.
