Timpani Building to the Beat of Its Own Drum

February 15, 2007 —  Timpani Software, a Colorado Springs, Colo.-based build management company, announced its first major launch with BuildBeat in early February. Formerly known as DrumBeat CI, which was available only through Timpani’s Web site, the new version of BuildBeat is equipped with cross-platform capabilities, and support for the MySQL open source database.

BuildBeat also works with the CVS and Microsoft Team Foundation Server version control schemes; DrumBeat CI worked with Microsoft SourceSafe, PVCS Version Manager and Subversion. Other features that will remain in the new version include built-in unit testing support, asynchronous messaging to monitor builds, and a distributed building feature.

Kenneth Dietz, CEO of Timpani, said, “Distributed building is really important because if you’re doing work in a continuous integration environment, you really should have it. If a build doesn’t run fast enough, there will be a backlog of changes, so then the question becomes: ‘How can we make our builds run faster?’ Let’s employ the horsepower of more than one machine here; let’s divide it onto multiple computers.”

Dietz, the founder of TeamShare, which was acquired by Serena in 2003, also said he believes that build management has begun to grow in importance.

“I think it’s as important as defect tracking and version control,” he said. “Over the last decade, the amount of attention towards build has increased with the trend shifting to agile software. With the smaller

iterations involved in agile software releases, the build management phase is much more important.”
