BigLever Turns Gears for Business Side

February 15, 2007 —  A wizard that helps nontechnical workers walk through the decisions that need to be made about a new feature set in a software product is the key new feature in Gears 5.3, the automatic product configuration tool from BigLever Software. The software is available now.

The new focus of Gears is communication between the software engineering side and the business side, according to CEO Charles Krueger. BigLever has focused on software product line development, which has the criteria of asset reuse, variation management, and the ability to look at a software portfolio as a single system, not a set of individual products.

Gears 5.3 has a new Feature Model for capturing at the domain level the things that cause variations to occur across the portfolio. Users can create a feature profile in the model that Gears interprets to find the variation points in key assets that are needed to make the software run from one platform to another, or under different brands, or with different pricing.
