Four-Man Panel Discusses Flattening World

December 1, 2006 —  From sovereignty to software design, the issues touched upon during a panel discussion last Thursday evening in New York were wide-ranging and forward-looking.

The discussion, titled "Staying Ahead in a Flat World: What's Next?" featured Thomas L. Friedman, author of "The World Is Flat" and New York Times foreign affairs columnist; Tim O'Reilly, CEO of O'Reilly Media; Brian Behlendorf, CTO and founder of CollabNet; and Devin Wenig, COO of Reuters Group. CollabNet sponsored the event.

The four men discussed the effects of technology such as Web 2.0 and open source on today's world, and the positives and negatives of connecting the globe with constantly advancing tools.

When asked if he thought that today's nations could one day be replaced by global governance and transnational institutions, Friedman replied, "What I've found consistently is that identity, ethnicity and religion still exert an enormous power over people's mind. Sovereignty always seems to get in the way. I don't see it going there quite yet."

O'Reilly, meanwhile, touched on the culture of software innovators. "It's really the culture of participation. The culture of participation is most often driven by the most passionate users. What I've found is that people start out basically as users, then they get more excited and get involved in something like Apache. A lot of technology starts out that way, with people who are just doing it for love," said O'Reilly.
