FROM OUR READERS

September 18, 2006 —
Ya'll sure did take a liking to Alan Zeichick's 9/11 column. The vast majority of responses were quite complimentary and very thoughtful. Here, then, is a sampling of these letters.

Thanks for your thoughtful and insightful comments about September 11. This indeed is a day to remember what this day now means in the American lexicon as well as give thanks for all the good that surfaces when people help others, under all circumstances.

Best regards, Lori Piotrowski - Public Relations Manager, LANSA

I thought your commentary on the aftermath of 9/11 was well said. It reminded me of how that moment in time has infiltrated our lives. I mean, just the fact that I am reading about it in the SD Times newsletter shows how it affects everything. Your mention of Peter Goodrich---how you interviewed him one day and the next day, poof, he was gone---made me remember again the innocent individuals that were killed that day.

I have been purposely avoiding hearing, reading and thinking about 9/11 on this anniversary date, but your article sneaked in under my radar. I'm glad it did. I want to remember those people like Peter.

Take care, Elena Lawrence

I just wanted to thank you for remembering Peter in your column today. Not an anniversary goes by that we don't think of him too. He was such a spot of joy around here and with us for such a short time. I thought you would be happy to know that his family have done wonderful things with his legacy and have built a school for girls in Afghanistan. He'd have been so proud (and probably abashed) to be honored this way. We're hosting our annual Peter Goodrich golf tournament on the 20th of September, and proceeds go to the foundation (http://www.goodrichfoundation.org). Thanks again for keeping him in your heart.

Ellyn Winters-Robinson - Vice President, Marketing, MKS Inc.

Hi, here's what I think. Frankly I'm sick of hearing about it. Every time 9/11 is trotted out, I'm reminded of how much we value lives within racial/cultural/geographical proximity more than others. Every time I hear about how much 'the world changed' (which really, it didn't, apart from highlighting how meaningless and reactionary airport security is---e.g., suddenly fluids are out, as if nobody knew beforehand, yet we still ship packages without screening on passenger jets!), every time I hear it, I think about this:

-- In Rwanda, 1,000,000 innocent people died. This is equivalent to Sept. 11th EVERY DAY FOR ONE YEAR!

-- 30,000 children die of poverty every day. That's the same as ten times as many that died on Sept. 11th, EVERY DAY!

I'm sure there are many other examples of this disparity.

Part of the issue is that genocide and poverty are not particularly scary to us, and are therefore ignored by the media and political machines that feed off of our fear. Now if political and social systems were software, could we fix it?!

Jim
