More Team Smarts for Team Pro

Alexsys emphasizes collaboration, security for development projects

July 15, 2006 —  Alexsys has bolstered its project management tool, claiming to improve security and collaboration capabilities with the release last month of Team Pro 2.8, the Stoneham, Mass.-based company’s project management and collaboration software.

Team Pro, which starts at US$295 per seat, is used to run complex projects such as software development, defect tracking and other efforts that require large teams to work together, said Alexsys president and founder Rich Bianchi. New to this release is the ability to “flag” an unlimited number of tasks, allowing one team member to alert another about an issue that needs to be discussed, for example.

Also new is the ability to add a virtually unlimited number of new fields, enabling teams to customize the offering. Better integration with Microsoft Outlook allows team members to “drag” an e-mail message into Team Pro, without having to copy and paste, said Bianchi. “Now the e-mail message is part of the task history.”

The updated offering works with Microsoft SQL Server (version 7 and higher), mySQL (version 4.2 and higher) and Oracle (version 8 and higher). Team Pro 2.8 replaces two earlier versions—Team 2 and Team-SQL—and competes with offerings from IBM Rational and San Mateo, Calif.-based Serena, according to Bianchi. The company also announced it is offering Alexsys Team FreePack, a free single-user installation.

Team Pro 2.8 now supports multiple administrators, compared with one in the previous versions. And it also allows those administrators to apply security policies to e-mail attachments.

“For instance, you can specify that Team Pro accepts doc files from the Windows version of the software but not from the Web interface,” said Bianchi. It’s important to exercise security policies, he said. “All you need is an [executable] that comes from the Web. Run it and you’re dead.”
