Security for Those Who Go It Alone

Scaled-down version of CodeAssure caters to the solo Java developer

December 15, 2005 —  Application security isn’t a problem just for enterprise development teams, according to Secure Software, which last month introduced CodeAssure Solo, a scaled-down version of its source-code security checker aimed at individual Java programmers.

CodeAssure Solo checks source code for as many as 90 different types of security problems or shortcomings, including buffer overflows, integer overflows and race conditions (where a user and a malicious program are in a “race” to access a file first), and how the application’s behavior is programmed.

It also can examine cryptography problems, such as weak cryptography in a random number generator, or misuse of SSL security.

More language support
Implemented as an Eclipse plug-in, CodeAssure Solo is designed for the single developer, and supports only the Java language, including JavaServer Pages. Future versions will support Visual Studio and .NET languages, said Dale Gardner, director of product management for Secure Software.

The company is considering a version for Perl as well, he added.

CodeAssure also checks for input validation errors and things that relate to program behavior, such as accessing the file system or the network when it isn’t supposed to.

“Wherever [the program] goes—if it goes into a library, we’ll follow it there,” said Gardner. This allows the programmer to check for back doors that may have been slipped into the code.

CodeAssure Solo joins Team and Enterprise editions, also for Eclipse. Team supports Java, C and C++ and is designed for collaborating groups of developers and security specialists in code analysis, letting them share reports and status information. Support for .NET languages is planned for later this year.

CodeAssure Enterprise allows for the application and enforcement of app security analysis, standards and best practices across entire organizations, including externally developed code. This way, all code generated throughout the enterprise is subject to IT policies and checks.

CodeAssure Solo is available now for US$399 per developer seat for a one-year subscription.

A 10-day trial version can be downloaded at Www.Securesoftware.com
