FairCom Marries Speed of ISAM With Standard SQL

New DB access product includes tools for C, C++, supports Borland component model

July 15, 2003 — FairCom Corp., a company that specializes in ISAM database access, in mid-June began shipping a product that combines both ISAM and SQL engines and includes development tools for working with Borland Software Corp.'s tools or for working in C and C++.

The combination marries the speed and smaller footprint of the lower-level Indexed Sequential Access Method (ISAM) language with the data-sharing and industry standard of SQL, said Randall Hoff, director of business development.

c-treeSQL Server for Windows includes embedded SQL and interactive SQL utilities, as well as JDBC and ODBC drivers. FairCom (www.faircom.com) also released a new edition of its c-tree Plus embedded database development system with VCL and CLX, Borland's component model, as well as C and C++ interfaces.

"Our executable is going to be from 500K to a megabyte at the ISAM level," he said. "When you get started working with c-tree, you get the performance and control of the ISAM level, but you get the data-sharing and industry standard of SQL, all at the same time."

The new database development system includes partitioned files, which appear logically to be a single file, but are actually a set of files with contents set off by the value of a partition key. This makes it possible to define the data with a range of values that can be purged or archived rather than addressing individual records.

The system includes redesigned caching and indexing. It also includes new data filter options designed to reduce access time when working with data subsets.

c-tree Plus V7.12 is priced at US$895. It includes development servers for the c-treeSQL Server and standard c-tree Server, as well as development editions of the JDBC, ODBC and native Seagate Crystal Report Drivers. Production editions of the c-treeSQL Server and c-tree Server are licensed based on the platform and number of connections per installed executable.

c-treeSQL Servers for Windows start at $790 for eight single- or dual-processor connections.
