Remembering the ‘Rules of the Garage’
Hewlett-Packard has long been an inspirational company, not just because of its current prowess in the hardware and software markets, of course, but because of the many stories about its origins in a Palo Alto, Calif., garage, back in 1939. Considered by many to be the true founders of Silicon Valley, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard epitomized the startup, turning an investment of US$538 into a tremendous success.

A year of peace
What a year! In the past 12 months, we’ve seen a lot of change – some good, some bad. The global economic meltdown, top of mind for so many SD Times subscribers, is squarely in the “bad” category. Across the board, and across the world, jobs are in peril, due to business closings, downsizing, cutbacks, hiring freezes and salary freezes. I hope that all of you have jobs and homes – and that you’re able to keep them in the New Year.

Do you twitter?
Social Media! You can love it or hate it, but it’s revolutionizing communications. People don’t send e-mails, they text. Oh, sorry, that’s so two-weeks-ago. Now, instead of texting, they twitter.

The mis-education of software developers
When Bjarne Stroustrup talks, we listen. And when Bjarne decries the training of software developers in our colleges and universities, we need to do something about it.

Do we need another rich Internet platform?
Sun’s JavaFX is here. It was announced at the JavaOne conference—in 2007. Sun began delivering early bits of its rich Internet application software this summer. As I wrote last May, Sun is talking big about having a common display platform for “all the screens of your life,” that is, desktops, notebooks and mobile devices.

Looking forward, looking back
Today is the first day of December, and although the year’s not over yet (there’s still more than 8% of 2008 left on the calendar), the start of this month always puts me into an odd mood. On one hand, it’s natural to look back on all that happened in the year that’s about to end. On the other hand, it’s equally natural to look forward to what’s coming in the year ahead.

PC Magazine and the changing media world
PC Magazine, one of the most venerable and respected computer magazines in the United States, announced last week that it's switching to "digital only." In other words, after the January 2009 issue, the magazine's gone. Instead, the editors, writers and advertisers can be found on the Web in the new "PCMag Digital Network."

From EXEC to EXEC 2 to REXX to NetRexx
Andrew Binstock's column last week, "The Return of NetRexx," brought back some fond memories from my past associations with NetRexx and its big-iron predecessors.

Do your execs care about software quality?
According to one interpretation of some new research, 40% of CIOs admit corporate indifference to their own software quality. That's nearly half.

The cross-platform Microsoft loves Mac more than 64-bit Windows
Silverlight represents one of those rare occasions where Microsoft promised to deliver cross-platform software—and delivered on those promises with a first-class implementation for Mac OS X as well as Windows, and for Firefox and Safari in addition to Internet Explorer.

Save money with SharePoint
You can call us late converts to the power of SharePoint. Although we've had the Microsoft collaboration server installed at BZ Media for quite a few years, it's only within the past 12 months that we've begun to exploit its power.

Software development in turbulent times
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, says the beginning of "A Tale of Two Cities." It may be hard for many workers to look beyond the economic uncertainties of the global economy to feel optimistic about their jobs and their personal finances.

Gearing up for EclipseWorld
It's funny that next week is the Software Test & Performance Conference (Sept. 24–26 in Boston), but my thoughts are swirling around EclipseWorld 2008 (Oct. 28-30 in Reston, Va.).

Dilbert and Wally will rejoice: ISO 9001 is being updated for 2008
There's a new version of the ISO 9001 quality standard coming. The proposed draft, ISO 9001:2008, is an incremental evolution over the previous version, ISO 9001:2000. It should be out in October or November.

Recommended read: 'Design Concepts in Programming Languages'
MIT Press' massive new tome is excellently researched, thorough and a must-have for your deskside bookcase. Just make sure the shelf is sturdy enough for its 1,322 pages: This is not a book to carry in your hand luggage for your next plane trip.

Apple ascendant
For a few hours last week, and again this Tuesday, Apple's market capitalization exceeded that of Google's. That's astounding, when you consider that Google has been superlatively hyped non-stop over the past few years and has been branded as the destroyer of newspaper advertising, the big threat to Microsoft and the ultimate power on Planet Earth.

Microsoft's Mojave Experiment only proves that Windows Vista demos well
I'm unimpressed with Microsoft's so-called "Mojave Experiment." This marketing campaign from Redmond wants to change perceptions of Windows Vista by getting people to admit that it's not as bad as they previously thought after viewing hand-crafted demos of its coolest features.

LinuxWorld: It's about the phones, data centers and penguins
While some call it the March of the Penguins, this week's LinuxWorld conference is a sign of how far Linux has come. It's mainstream, at least in the data center. Nobody need ever apologize for installing rack after rack of Linux servers.

When the cloud was good, it was very very good. But when it was bad, it was horrid.
Cloud computing took a big hit this week amid two significant service outages. The biggest one, at least as it affects enterprise computing, is the eight-hour failure of Amazon's Simple Storage Service.

Apple is great at marketing, not great at execution
I'm not sure who coined the phrase "second coming" to refer to the release of the iPhone 3G. But sadly for Apple, while the new smartphone handset may have delighted the million-odd customers who were able to receive one, last Friday's iPhone 3G launch left a left of potential customers bitter and angry.
