Zeichick's Take: Apple ascendant
For a few hours last week, and again this Tuesday, Apple's market capitalization exceeded that of Google's. That's astounding, when you consider that Google has been superlatively hyped non-stop over the past few years and has been branded as the destroyer of newspaper advertising, the big threat to Microsoft and the ultimate power on Planet Earth.

Guest View: The rise of IT Specialists
In the old days, those who worked in IT were separated from the business end. But as the structure of IT has changed, so have the roles within IT, and it is now necessary for businesspeople and IT workers to work as one.

Short Takes: Talking conferences
We take a look at some of the conferences coming up, including a brand new one, the SharePoint Technology Conference. Also, a word on bloggers and Kevin Johnson, and IBM Rational has a grammar checker for code.

Zeichick's Take: Microsoft's Mojave Experiment only proves that Windows Vista demos well
I'm unimpressed with Microsoft's so-called "Mojave Experiment." This marketing campaign from Redmond wants to change perceptions of Windows Vista by getting people to admit that it's not as bad as they previously thought after viewing hand-crafted demos of its coolest features.

Zeichick's Take: LinuxWorld: It's about the phones, data centers and penguins
While some call it the March of the Penguins, this week's LinuxWorld conference is a sign of how far Linux has come. It's mainstream, at least in the data center. Nobody need ever apologize for installing rack after rack of Linux servers.

Short Takes: What went wrong with the iPhone
Why did the iPhone launch disappoint, why HP is ready to purchase EDS, why trust your money to a SmartyPig, and why bother with e-books?

Guest View: The pitfalls of platform as a service
Platform as a service may be the next logical progression of SaaS, but as it's currently being implemented, developers should be careful. Using platforms like Google App Engine can restrict your coding freedom.

From the Editors: Eschewing XML?
Google's changes to XML may be good for Google, but the editors worry if it will lead other companies to develop their own solutions, thus removing the universality that XML has. Also, what Windows doesn't need is APIs.

From the Editors: Battlestar Midori
We examine what changes Midori has that make it a cut above Windows as it currently exists. Also, keep an eye on the business rules management software market, as IBM's Ilog purchase won't be the last big move here.

Zeichick's Take: When the cloud was good, it was very very good. But when it was bad, it was horrid.
Cloud computing took a big hit this week amid two significant service outages. The biggest one, at least as it affects enterprise computing, is the eight-hour failure of Amazon's Simple Storage Service.

Zeichick's Take: Apple is great at marketing, not great at execution
I'm not sure who coined the phrase "second coming" to refer to the release of the iPhone 3G. But sadly for Apple, while the new smartphone handset may have delighted the million-odd customers who were able to receive one, last Friday's iPhone 3G launch left a left of potential customers bitter and angry.

From the Editors: Happy birthday, GPL v3
The GPL v3 turned one year old last month, and already shows some signs of promise, though it still has a long way to go before it can reach v2's caliber. Also, Symbian just might turn out to be the next Eclipse.

Short Takes: Looking back at Mathematica
The editors reminisce about the joys of Mathematica and working at Miller Freeman, complain about the mysterious PowerCinema error message and explain why IT governance is needed.

Guest View: Make Quality a Deliverable
Despite the departures of Agitar and Enerjy, unit testing is still a useful part of the software development process. Here are ways you can implement unit testing to maximize the quality of your code.

Zeichick's Take: The week that everything changed
Other than people queuing up at midnight for their copies of Windows 95, I can't think of a technology company that so fervently inspires consumer anticipation than Apple. Tomorrow's eagerly awaited launch of the second-generation Apple mobile telephone proves that Steve Jobs is still at the top of his game.

Zeichick's Take: Greet ISO 32000-1:2008, the official PDF standard
It's hard to overstate the importance of the Portable Document Format. Thanks to PDF, you can distribute documents to people, and they can read it without knowing what type of application created it.
7/3/2008 1:30PM EST
From the Editors: Business as usual at the JCP
We take a look at the Java Community Process and wonder why everyone is getting up in arms over the controversy. Also, Apple will need more than widgets to raise the iPhone's stature.

Short Takes: Lack-of-oil-driven software development
Our editors go over the ways you can shorten your commute through technology, reactions to Yahoo's rebuffing of Microsoft and Snow Leopard's appearance at the Apple WWDC, and the winner of SAP's Project Green contest.

Letters to the Editors: Testing in Scrum
A reader explains how testers can use agile software development to increase their effectiveness, while another reader asks us to consider how much the Pick OS has contributed to the computing world.

Zeichick's Take: Packets, Not Petroleum
What will you do when gasoline hits US$17 per gallon? That's what drivers in the United Kingdom have been facing this week.
6/19/2008 1:30PM EST
Short Takes: Touching on Microsoft's plans
Our editors take a look at Microsoft's touch-screen plans for Windows 7, the implications of the "Implicit Internet" and, why cloud computing is here to stay as a platform.
