SD Times Blog: KitKat teasers and clues galore ahead of release

October 30, 2013 —  There are only two days left in October, and if the ramped up pace of teasers is any indication, Android KitKat will be upon us before November.

(KitKat countdown: The good, the bad, and the just plain silly)

Over the past few days on the Kit Kat Google+ page and Twitter account, we’ve seen four teaser photos and a video in three days. The countdown theory has proven an amusing wild goose chase, but as far as actual clues go, we’ve had a few solid leads. The most promising came on Monday:

“Mmmmm! #MovieBreak”

Theories abound have speculated that since this year is the 31st anniversary of “E.T.,” it means KitKat will be released on Halloween. Since Halloween was the rumored release date well before the countdown frenzy started, it seems like our best bet right now.

Theories guessing that the one KitKat finger meant one day left went out the window on Tuesday.

Then this morning, the KitKat Twitter account tweeted this: “Nice Passport Pic! #AndroidKITKATHere”

Android KitKat

We could spend hours squinting at ever last number and scrap of data in Android KitKat’s passport, but weeks of speculation and trickery have taught us better. It’s Halloween or bust this time. Though if you can pick a solid clue or theory out of this photo, don’t hesitate to let us know.

In keeping with the world traveller theme, we also have a good idea of what stamps Android has recently gotten on the passport above. Yesterday, Kit Kat released this 34-picture album of the KitKat alien getting his Flat Stanley on, snapping photos of the little green guy on globetrotting adventures.

Adding to the teaser overload is this other typically innocuous photo:

“Time out! Definitely time for a break! #KITKAT”

Android KitKat

The two Kit Kat wafers in the picture would be another clue point to a Halloween release, but let’s not blow this one out of proportion. Halloween is still our best bet at this point, but it could just as easily mean it’s time for everyone to take a much-needed break from speculating and just take these teasers for what they are: amusement.

Speaking of amusement, the best teaser of the week was yesterday’s 30-second “magic break”:

“Android KitKat 4.4 – one to enjoy whilst you’re waiting...#magicbreak.”

It feels like a metaphor for this whole ordeal, really. Google and Nestlé are the magicians, dangling a candy bar in front of us, then pulling it away, eating it and calling it magic. After all these smoke and mirrors, Android KitKat 4.4 had better be the most magical mobile OS we’ve ever seen.
