Artisan acquires Extessy for requirements management

November 11, 2009 —  Modeling company Artisan Software Tools has brought in new requirements and simulation products with its acquisition of Germany-based Extessy, which supplies system requirements and co-simulation software and services, along with software and consulting services for embedded system development.

One of Extessy’s core products is the EXERPT requirements management platform, which tries to provide seamless exchange of files and specifications between different software tools without any data loss. It tries to accomplish this by integrating with the Requirements Interchange Format, a generic requirements exchange format developed by Hersteller Initiative Software, an automotive industry consortium working to promote quality assurance in software design.

“We had SysML requirements management capabilities in our modeling tool, but EXERPT does things like taking DOORS requirements and transfer them into another supplier’s DOORS database, or move them across to somewhere else,” said Hedley Apperly, vice president of marketing at Artisan.

With the acquisition, Artisan is hoping to expand its market share in Germany. All Extessy employees are expected to join Artisan, and Artisan will set up a German headquarters at Extessy’s Wolfsburg offices.

The acquisition follows Artisan’s purchase of UK-based Brass Bullet, a systems engineering consultancy. Apperly said both acquisitions bolsters the company’s overall consulting and professional services.
