Curl's new data services kit works with AMF

January 6, 2009 —
Curl has released a data services kit that uses an Adobe binary protocol to decrease data transfer problems.

Curl Data Kit Data Services (CDK-DS), announced today, is for enterprise developers building new applications that require a fast data connection to existing server infrastructure, according to Curl executives. This might include developers who need to bring data into Adobe Flash or Flex applications, or developers upgrading existing Curl applications that require  reliable, high-speed data connectivity.

The product has a set of APIs that lets users interface to Adobe’s Action Message Format, a binary protocol for exchanging data between a rich Internet application client and back-end server platforms. AMF can be used on Adobe's Flex LiveCycle Data Services and with Adobe’s BlazeDS open-source remoting and messaging technology. As a result, the data services kit offers all the remoting and Web messaging services available in BlazeDS, including remote procedure calls and publish/subscribe messaging.

Curl executives said AMF will bring faster data transfer time to the Curl platform. “If you’re doing data intensive applications, you need a binary data streaming protocol like this if you’re going to get any kind of reasonable performance,” said Richard Treadway, Curl’s vice president of marketing and product strategy.

Treadway said that CDK-DS increases software developers’ overall speed and efficiency.

“Curl in general offers a very rich environment for building graphic user interfaces, so there’s certainly a programmer productivity message with Curl,” he said. “I think this component augments that in the area of creating an end-to-end solution.”
