SpringSource dm Server incorporates OSGi bundles

October 2, 2008 —
SpringSource, the company behind Spring, is throwing its support behind OSGi; on Tuesday, it announced the release of its first Java server, the SpringSource dm Server, based on Apache Tomcat, OSGi and the Spring framework.

This new application server eliminates much of the headaches associated with dependency management, by using OSGi bundles and inserting new applications and libraries without restarting the server.

Jeff McAffer, co-lead of the Eclipse Equinox project, upon which dm Server is based, said that the goals of the Spring team have become closely aligned with some of the goals behind OSGi.

“They're quite involved in the OSGi enterprise expert group,” McAffer said of SpringSource. “They've been working on this things called Spring Dynamic Modules. They're going to end up with the next-gen of the specification, which will include some things from Spring dynamic modules. The idea is [that] you cross Spring with all this compositionality, and OSGi and its modularity, and you can use Spring to compose modules. Spring Beans can show up as OSGi services. There're some interesting twists in there, and what they've been doing is trying to position themselves as the next-generation enterprise application server.”

Indeed, dm Server includes many of the next-generation features enabled by OSGi. Because the server is based on Apache Tomcat, it allows for clustering and other well-worn features to be mashed together with the advanced features of OSGi.

SpringSource hopes to base its new SpringSource Application Platform on the dm Server. That platform is aiming for cloud-computing capabilities and will likely be run on top of the dm Server.
