McCabe Software acquires Agitar's assets

July 9, 2008 —
McCabe Software has pulled ailing Java unit test toolmaker Agitar Software out of the ashes, acquiring all of its assets two months after Agitar ceased operations.

McCabe announced the acquisition yesterday and vowed to provide a smooth transition, with Agitar customers receiving uninterrupted customer service and product support.

Agitar began to wind down its operations in May and retained the services of Sherwood Partners LLC to renegotiate its debt and monetize its intellectual property. Sherwood sent a notice of assignment to creditors on Agitar’s behalf, which is an alternative to bankruptcy.

Agitar produced a Java unit testing suite called AgitarOne that was build upon its AgitarOne Agitator testing technology, which automatically generates test cases and analyzes the results.

In a May interview with SD Times, Jerry Rudisin, CEO of Agitar Software until April, reasoned that Java unit testing was the wrong horse to back, saying, “The practice works, but it hasn’t taken off as a mainstream practice.”

“I’m not surprised that someone bought the technology. We never saw their technology being a problem; their demise was their execution to market,” said Mark Driver, research vice president at Gartner.

“Agitar has won a multitude of industry and technology awards over the years, and the company has a passionate following in the marketplace, particularly in agile development circles,” David Belhumeur, McCabe’s CEO, said in a prepared statement.

McCabe’s flagship products are McCabe IQ and McCabe CM, solutions that, on one hand, report on code complexity and quality, and on the other, manage and track the application life cycle.

“[Agitar] had a good set of technologies that served a need early on in the QA process,” said Driver. He added that AgitarOne might be a good fit within larger suite or a family of QA technologies.

In his remarks, Belhumeur said that the companies’ products are complementary and noted as well that they share many customers.
