Microsoft Reshuffles Key Executives

Fourteen were promoted to the roles of corporate and senior vice president; some veterans walked the dusty trail.

February 15, 2008 —
Yesterday, Microsoft announced a major reorganization of its executives that spans across its divisions.

Seven executives were promoted to the role of senior vice president; a rung down, there are seven new corporate vice presidents as well. Meanwhile, other Microsoft veterans are out, or are on their way out.

The new senior vice presidents are Chris Capossela, Kurt DelBene, Antoine Leblond, Andy Lees, Satya Nadella, S. Somasegar and Bill Veghte. Walid Abu-Hadba, Brad Brooks, Larry Cohen, Steve Guggenheimer, Scott Guthrie, Roz Ho and Brian Tobey are now corporate vice presidents.

Walid Abu-Hadba is replacing Sanjay Parthasarathy as corporate vice president of Developer and Platform Evangelism, while Brad Brooks will assume the role of Windows marketing chief, a position formerly held by Mike Sievert.

Scott Guthrie is now the corporate vice president with responsibilities for the .NET developer platform. He will continue to supervise the development teams that deliver Visual Studio developer tools and .NET Framework technologies.

Steve Guggenheimer is taking the reins of Microsoft’s OEM business from Scott Di Valerio, while Mobile Communications executive Pieter Knook is replaced by former Server and Tools manager Andrew Lees.

Bill Veghte may be the big winner, having been assigned a broad set of new responsibilities. Previously corporate vice president of the Windows Business group, he will now oversee all end-user business strategy, sales and marketing for Microsoft’s Windows Client, Windows Live, MSN and Search divisions.

Roz Ho, formerly head of Entertainment and Devices Division Labs and the Mac business unit before that, gets a new title at Premium Mobile Experiences, and will take on the work of absorbing Danger into the Entertainment and Devices division. Microsoft announced on Feb. 11 that it had agreed to acquire the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company.

Other promotions mean little or no change in duties, including those of Chris Capossela of the Information Worker product management group, Larry Cohen in Corporate Communications, Kurt DelBene of the Office Business Platform group, Antoine Leblond with Office Productivity Applications, Satya Nadella of the Search, Portals and Advertising group, S. Somasegar of the Developer division, and Entertainment and Devices Division manufacturing and operations boss Brian Tobey.

Finally, Online Services Business head and former Ask.com CEO Steve Berkowitz will depart Microsoft in August.

Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer explained in a prepared statement that one of his top priorities is to nurture the company’s existing leadership team, as well as attract talent from outside the company.

“Each of these executives will play a critical role in leading Microsoft into the future. Today’s promotions are a result of their ability to think strategically on a global scale, the respect they’ve earned from their peers, customers and partners, and their significant contributions to the company,” said Ballmer.
