Red Hat Releases Enterprise Linux 5

March 15, 2007 —
Red Hat yesterday released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0. This new edition of its corporate-focused Linux distribution is heavily integrated with new virtualization capabilities. Red Hat introduced the new operating system around the world at numerous media events, and the primary focus of the company's message was on these new virtualization capabilities.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is also natively 64-bit. Red Hat and AMD have worked together to optimize the operating system for use on 64-bit Opteron chips, according to Red Hat. The company has also released Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop 5, which offers corporations a new option for desktop deployments. Along with the new virtualization capabilities, individual desktop systems can be managed and virtualized through Red Hat's new management tools, allowing employee systems to become part of the processing grid after closing time.

As an adjunct to the release, Red Hat support managers published their personal phone numbers online yesterday, in order to prove that their support offerings were top-notch. If support isn't up to snuff, the thinking goes, customers can contact the executives in charge of service and support at Red Hat directly to complain.
