Sun Opens Umbrella on Java ME Tools

March 1, 2007 —
Sun Microsystems, at a press conference last night, spoke up about the Mobile Service Architecture (MSA), aka Java Specification Request 248. This umbrella JSR is a collection of previous JSRs that are now grouped together as a suggested bundle. The hope is to bring Java ME developers more standardized Java environments in which to develop. Sun held the press conference to announce that it is offering MSA compliance testing kits and tooling to Java ME developers.

With greater similarity now promised across disparate handsets as a result of WSA, Sun is pushing tools into NetBeans to deal with the MSA compliance. As MSA includes specifications for handling 3D graphics, secure transactions, VoIP and streaming video, Sun's NetBeans Mobility Pack 5.5 offers tooling and frameworks for the creation of such content.

"When your cell phone allows you to see your current location on a 3D map, you can thank the Mobile Service Architecture for that, when your applications including vector graphic, Bluetooth [and] messaging work in unison, you can thank MSA for that too, and if it becomes a lot easier to develop mobile applications, you can thank MSA again," said Jean-Marie Dautelle, member of the JCP Java ME EC. "MSA is a boon for all—developers, manufacturers, operators, enterprises [and] consumers alike."
