Select Readies Services for Reuse

November 1, 2006 —
Components are out. Services are in.

Select Business Solutions in mid-October released a renamed and updated flagship product, Solution Factory 7.0, dropping the word “component” from the title, and entirely rewrote the code of its Asset Manager piece to update the metamodel, take in the Reusable Asset Specification and go fully thin-client.

One of the pieces of Solution Factory is Select Architect, the modeling tool that supports BPMN, UML and data modeling, according to Hedley Apperly, senior vice president at Select, which was purchased in February by Avantc? Software, a private equity firm. Solution Factory gives modeling support for business processes, system designs and traceability through the source code and database schema, Apperly said, creating a model-driven, services-based approach to development.

New to this release of Select Architect is the ability to turn on or off diagram views based on a person’s role in the organization, he explained. There also are XML Schema Generation extensions to create Web services. Finally, the new version integrates with Visual Studio 2005.

Select Asset Manager, formerly Component Manager, is now a fully Web-based application running on the company’s repository, Apperly said. “We wanted there to be no install,” he said of the product that helps users publish, manage, find and reuse software assets. New to Asset Manager are knowledge assets based on the RAS 2.2 specification. One of the goals of the Asset Manager rewrite, Apperly explained, was to facilitate collaboration between the consumers and suppliers of assets through the Web interface.
