Windows Opens for PHP

At the annual PHP conference on Tuesday, Zend and Microsoft announced a partnership to improve PHP's performance on Windows Internet Information Server. The agreement will forge numerous avenues of development for PHP on both Windows Server 2003 and future releases of Windows Longhorn. Zend's end of the bargain includes the creation of a Windows testing lab to aid development of faster and more integrated PHP updates. Microsoft, on the other hand, will build a new IIS component, called FastCGI, through which PHP will interact with the IIS server.

"Interoperability continues to be an important requirement for our customers-particularly when it comes to open-source applications that run on Windows. This announcement today continues our commitment to making it easier for partners and developers-regardless of the development model they employ-to take advantage of increased reliability of the Microsoft Windows Server platform," said Bill Hilf, general manager of technical platform strategy at Microsoft. "As Zend is a clear leader in the PHP community, we are excited to be working with them on this joint collaboration effort designed to provide developers using PHP with the best possible experience within a Microsoft environment."

Ballmer announces Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 betas Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used the CES 2009 spotlight to announce the availability of betas for the upcoming version of Windows. Preview versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 have been distributed to testers, with general availability coming tomorrow.

Microsoft details WCF and WF in next-gen .NET Easier creation of REST-type applications and more seamless integration between WCF and WF are some of the main focuses in Microsoft's plans. Also, "Dublin," an update to Windows Server 2008, will allow it to host composite applications by extending the Application Server Role.
