Supporting Visual Studio, Team System

Microsoft partners pledge allegiance to IDE, new collaborative ecosystem

July 1, 2005 —
ORLANDO, FLA. — A number of companies announced a variety of plug-ins and other support for Visual Studio 2005, due the week of Nov. 7, at Tech-Ed here last month.

Avicode unveiled the release candidate for the Operations Edition of Intercept Studio, its application monitoring software. The software, which will be delivered this month through Microsoft’s MSDN Web site, is a snap-in for Microsoft Operations Manager, which gives the console visibility into the health of ASP.NET, Web services and .NET remoting applications.

BindView demonstrated bv-Control for SQL Server 2005, a tool for assessing the security risks associated with developing and deploying applications to Microsoft’s database. The software, which will ship in early 2006, has new reporting features, executes context on programmable modules, and tracks compliance with password and other security policies.

Compuware’s DevPartner Studio Professional Edition 8.0, which integrates with and extends the capabilities of Visual Studio, introduces new performance analysis capabilities, and also incorporates some of the error-simulation capabilities found in Compuware’s DevPartner Fault Simulator, a separate product. The new DevPartner Studio is to ship later in 2005.

The company also previewed TestPartner 5.4, its functional and regression testing tool, which brings GUI testing into Visual Studio.

FarPoint Technologies is now shipping version 2.0 of Spread for Windows Forms, a component that can be used to add spreadsheets and grid functions to client applications. This update adds cross-sheet referencing, column filtering and conditional cell formatting. The company also offers an ASP.NET version of the spreadsheet component.

Infragistics released NetAdvantage 2005 Vol. 2, an update to its presentation-layer tool set for WinForms, ASP.NET, Tablet PC and COM. The suite, which costs US$795 for a one-year subscription or $495 alone, adds a new WinTree control with multicolumn support, as well as improves its WinForms and ASP.NET grids, charts and other components.

InnerWorkings, a training company, is offering new educational programs for helping Visual Basic 6.0 developers move to managed code with Visual Basic 2005. The programs, called Initial Practice Sets, use a real-time code judging engine that gives students instant feedback on their coding. The lessons demonstrate how to develop Web-based applications using ASP.NET and Visual Basic .NET.

Metaphor has updated Conversation Manager, a speech application development system for .NET. Version 3.0 lets developers use Visual Studio and C# to build voice response applications.

Quest Software announced SQL Optimizer Extension, a new plug-in for Visual Studio. The software, currently in beta, helps developers tune SQL code from within the IDE, and is designed to exploit the new features in SQL Server 2005. Quest plans to deliver the final code in September.
