Compuware Graphs QA Workflow

February 15, 2007 —
Software testing processes aren’t always easy to implement. That’s why Compuware at the end of January decided to offer a new quality management solution that aims to better align functional tests with the processes that are required to implement them effectively. Compuware Quality Management Solution includes functional testing tools merged with a Web-based workflow and build administration system, and the company hopes enterprise development teams lacking in process controls for QA will see the solution as a path toward proper test control.

Mike Burba, Compuware’s marketing director for application delivery solutions, said the company has found that roughly 20 percent of enterprise quality assurance teams are in a position to use the governance solutions offered in Compuware CARS. On the other end of the spectrum, Compuware’s QA Center, which Burba described as a functional testing suite, is utilized properly by 80 percent of customers.

“Many of our customers have said: ‘For us to go from where we are today to this end-to-end life-cycle approach—we’re not even close to that. So give us something that helps us become more effective in our quality shop,’” said Burba.

The Web-based governance portal of the Quality Management Solution includes a fresh take on process design. Quality assurance managers can build graphical representations of their workflows, processes and build-time test batteries. The portal also includes data fuzzing capabilities that push regression tests further through automatically generated user input variables.

The Compuware Quality Management Solution also includes metrics and graphs to help managers get a better handle on the problems and successes their teams are having.

“We really tried to provide reports for QA managers so they can see all the projects in their team so they can identify the bottlenecks, drill down into that data, and get more detailed reports back so they can take action,” said Burba.
