Governance means different things to different people. But Mike Alden, CEO at Axceler, which sells governance software, sees three main aspects to governance: IT governance, which manages software and services; application governance, which manages the actual solutions being created; and content management, which controls what is used by whom, and when.
“There’s a growing awareness around governance," he said. "As the [SharePoint] platform matures and goes enterprise-wide, it’s getting scrutiny from IT. From our perspective, we don’t think SharePoint teams are equipped to talk to the IT governance folks.”
To help with that communication, Axceler will launch a survey later this year “to learn what people are really doing around governance versus what is the hype,” Alden said. “Our goal isn’t the governance tablets from on high. Microsoft already does that. We want to see what’s really going on.”
Alden said most inquiries he fields regarding governance are from people who had difficulty governing a SharePoint Server 2007 installation, but now want to “gets things right” as they migrate to 2010. “People are being far more plan-ful with 2010 than they ever were with 2007,” he said.

When you watch as much football as The Linker does, spectacular often seems routine. I mean, how excited can The Linker get about yet another one-handed catch, or a punt downed at the half-yard line, or a great open-field tackle? That said, The Linker must share the catch made by the New York Giants’ Domenik Hixon in Monday night’s game against the St. Louis Rams. THAT was truly spectacular!

| Quick branding tip: Styling SharePoint ribbon headers |
By Ryan Keller
Here’s a quick branding tip about styling the SharePoint ribbon group headers.
In the out-of-the-box v4.master master page, the SharePoint 2010 ribbon is a dark blue color, and unselected ribbon tabs stand out just fine against the dark background, like so:

But what if you have custom branding that calls for a very light background color in the ribbon? You might end up with something like this:

Kind of hard to read, wouldn’t you say?
