Have you hugged your sysadmin today? If not, perhaps you can come up with some other nice way to make them feel happy and satisfied on this, their only special day of the year. Here are a few ideas on how to make your sysadmins happy on this special day.
- Make them a cake.
- Go down to the IT offices and offer to wind cables, cut cables, or label old computers with bar codes for an afternoon.
- Bring your truck to the office and allow the admins to pile it full of their old electronics, then take them to be recycled.
- Buy your sysadmin a copy of his or her favorite movie. The Star Wars Trilogy (not the new ones), or a nice season of Star Trek should suffice.
- Wait an extra 5 to 10 minutes before calling in a down server. It might come back in the meantime.
- Take time to write that 5 minute Perl script they asked for a year ago.
- Build an automated messaging system for your admins. Something to SMS them when a server is down.
- Hold a dramatic reading for them. Perhaps from Bash.org or the BOfH?
- Reschedule a deployment until next week.
- Take a night on call for them.
- Send an email to your department calling out the great work from your admins.
