There has been a fight brewing over OpenOffice.org. Oracle now holds the reigns for the project, which was always a mostly-open source effort from Sun: Sun did most of the work and as such retained control of the project. Oracle inherited this, and has since announced plans to release control of the project. Evidently, the idea of forming a separate foundation to maintain the project going forward is an old chestnut, and bickering over just how this would happen has forced a major dispersal of the community. Today, in fact, 33 developers announced their departure from the project.
OpenOffice.org is familiar with this type of evacuation. The slow pace of change at the project is the reason for the creation of the Document Foundation, which distributes LibreOffice. The current kerfuffle is likely to create another open source office suite, as well. Add to this the growing popularity of online document editing systems, like Google Docs, and the field of competitors in the Office suite market suddenly looks as diverse as it did in the 1980's! It's been a long time since this space was so hotly contested.
