It seems location is becoming the new fad in mobile application development, especially when it comes to monetizing applications and "micro-marketing," if you will, to the end user. Piggybacking on this mentality of "location, location, location," Location Labs, called WaveMarket until June of this year, introduced its Universal Location Service platform a few months back. As of yesterday, the platform can now remotely access the locations of over 250 million mobile phones through its cloud-based API.
Working in conjunction with AT&T, Sprint-Nextel, T-Mobile and Verizon, smartphone and non-smartphone locations are determined by the carrier and therefore does not require download by the end user.
The API provides developers with real-time location information, which be used to build applications for logistics tracking, couponing, mobile marketing and more, the company said. Developers can register for a free account and access the SDKs and developer guide. The developer SDK is available for Java, .NET and PHP.
