In a candid discussion with Bloomberg news, three individuals from Research In Motion revealed the plans to run software used in the United States Army's Crusher tank on its yet-to-be-announced tablet computer. Developed by QNX Software Systems, which RIM purchased for US$200 million in April, the individuals said the software is used in products from companies such as Caterpillar Inc. and General Electric Co.
Looking to distinguish its tablet at debut time, one theory for this move is "RIM could take advantage of the independent software developers who create applications for QNX and build on the popularity of its BlackBerry smartphone corporate customers," said the article.
But for a company that significantly lags behind in the number of applications when compared to Apple, it seems rather silly to me that RIM would limit itself to such a particular group of developers - especially if its looking to be strong contender in the tablet computer market.
