Sometimes, software can be used for something as important as helping to find the cure for cancer.
That is what the Scripps Research Institute is doing in collaboration with software services firm InterKnowlogy, having created the Collaborative Molecular Environment (C-ME). The C-ME is a rich client application that creates 3D models of cell and protein molecules. The neat-looking, bright colored, twisty image allows scientists and doctors to work together and share research by letting them attach images, research notes, or other documents to the image of the cancer cell.
Peter Kuhn, an associate professor with the non-profit Scripps Institute, said the C-ME is important because the missions that his cancer research lab are trying to carry out will not be completed by any single individual scientist or laboratory. So this offers scientists doing an extremely difficult job a better opportunity to put their heads together.
