Scott Morrison of Layer 7 Technologies wants to dispel what he calls a misconception that cloud computing is replacing service-oriented architecture (SOA).
The security company's chief architect said that nothing could be farther from the truth. "It would be madness to turn our backs on great innovation in SOA when, in fact, cloud is all about deployment," Morrison said. "It's not about building different kinds of applications. That's an important distinction that tends to get missed by a lot of people."
Maybe such a misconception is true, or maybe most developers are well aware that the two serve different functions. After all, this is a company that provides SOA governance and naturally wants to keep that part of the business fertile as they move into cloud security. But with much buzz and chatter around cloud computing these days, maybe it is important for people to remember that cloud won't be the fix-all remedy to all software project issues and business problems.
