TechExcel Adds Project Planning to DevTrack
By Alex Handy

August 1, 2006 — TechExcel’s popular DevTrack issue tracking system can now be expanded into the project management and planning space with the company’s new DevPlan add-on. DevPlan will be available in early August and will offer teams a way to plan future coding while taking past bugs into account.

Paul Unterberg, project manager at TechExcel, said developers used to working with Microsoft Project will feel right at home with DevPlan. “It’s similar to Microsoft Project’s gantt chart editor. You edit the durations and timelines, then you have tabs along the bottom to edit additional properties,” he said, describing the user interface.

The US$1,500 per-seat DevPlan installs atop DevTrack Enterprise Edition, and handles many DevTrack tasks automatically, including subproject creation. “Managers design their plans, then those plans are not only published to the report but also make a framework for what you have to do in DevTrack,” said Unterberg. “You edit the plan like a normal project plan.”

DevPlan’s new features tie into the added functionality of DevTrack 6.1, which will be released at the same time as DevPlan. In addition to laying the ground work for DevPlan integration, DevTrack 6.1 will add support for embedded HTML in issue descriptions and optionally tie into build management systems.

A browser-based interface is planned for early 2007, Unterberg said. The software currently outputs reports in HTML so they can be viewed within a browser.
