VersionOne adds mapping, planning features to agile manager

October 24, 2008 —
Agile project management provider VersionOne has added new planning and mapping features to its all-in-one management product.

V1: Agile Enterprise 8.3, released Tuesday, has a modified project tree that allows the creation of projects separately from a sprint or iteration schedule, according to VersionOne executives. This lets companies begin a project and make scheduling decisions later. Robert Holler, VersionOne’s CEO, said users can move products into different product lines and make changes over time.

“The benefit there is as you define your project tree, you roll up and report across the tree, and so when you reconfigure it, it now has the new reporting structure kind of built in,” Holler said. “That product that’s been moved into a new product line now rolls up properly within the new product line.”

Holler said that typical software development is often managed in a multi-tool environment, with different products being used for project management, requirements management, test cases and other parts of the life cycle. There may be between two to eight different tools to manage the cycle. V1: Agile Enterprise, on the other hand, brings a more “holistic” view of the software development process, he said, to track all the different phases.

“Developers don’t have to track down multiple tools. They log into a single environment and get a view of, ‘Here are the five bugs I’m working on, here are the three tasks and here are the requirements those tasks were generated from,' ” Holler said.

A new capacity-planning feature lets teams distribute the correct amount of time needed to work on various projects. For example, a user can allocate 24 hours of work to someone on their team during an iteration. As planning takes place, teams will be alerted if the amount of work planned exceeds the available capacity, according to the company.

“It’s a lower level of granularity and control with respect to task assignment,” Holler said. “It’s about getting a better feel for who’s available and how much work I should assign for each individual.”

Two new security roles have been added as member administration features. Organizations can define users to add and manage members, though they can’t change system configuration settings, VersionOne said. The other security role provides the ability to manage feature requests so an organization can obtain input from customers and stakeholders.

Other features in V1: Agile Enterprise include a Java version of its SDK as well as new inline add and edit capabilities so customers can save time by editing work items without having to open a new window. Additionally, the product integrates with Hewlett-Packard's Quality Center and Perforce’s SCM System.
