Office and SharePoint Server protocols documented

April 9, 2008 —  A new wave of technical documentation suggests that Microsoft is on track to deliver the initial protocol documentation for a selection of its high volume products in June.

Yesterday, the company posted 14,000 pages of preliminary documentation for essential Microsoft Office 2007 and SharePoint Server protocols on its MSDN Web site. Included in this wave is documentation for:

•Protocols between SharePoint Server 2007 and Office client applications;
•Protocols between SharePoint Server 2007 and other Microsoft server products;
•Protocols between Exchange Server 2007 and Outlook; and
•Protocols between Office 2007 client applications and other Microsoft server products.

Microsoft had announced a major interoperability initiative on Feb. 21. It committed itself to publish by June the documentation for the APIs of the aforementioned products as well as others, including Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista and all future releases of those products. The company also vowed to provide documentation for protocols related to the .NET Framework within the same timeframe.

Access to the documentation of these protocols is free, but implementing them is another matter because they remain Microsoft’s intellectual property. The company says that it will grant licenses to all relevant patents at “fair” and “non-discriminatory” rates, without actually discussing the terms.

“We believe that providing open, consistent access to these protocols will further unleash the creativity of all developers to work on real-world interoperability solutions. The implementation of Microsoft’s interoperability principles is an important component of our overall efforts to promote interoperability in the marketplace,” Tom Robertson, general manager of interoperability and standards at Microsoft, said in a prepared statement.
