Complex Event-Processing Made Simpler

April 25, 2007 —  At the Software Test & Performance Conference last week, I met yet another person involved in development and maintenance of the stock-trading infrastructure on Wall Street. I've encountered so many such people in my travels that I'm beginning to suspect that financial systems require a small army to keep afloat.

Perhaps making that job a tad bit easier is StreamBase Systems, which yesterday unveiled Stream Processing Platform 3.7. According to claims, the latest version of its complex event-processing system now incorporates predeveloped modules and improved visibility into its inner workings, which together simplify creation and maintenance of these high-performance applications.

Prebuilt modules come from templates that, along with scripts and custom code, can be reused to help accelerate development. Debugging, monitoring and performance tweaking are made easier with a new ability to watch multiple streams simultaneously, and to reuse stream simulations across apps.

New end-to-end adapters provide connectivity to Goldman Sachs' REDIPlus trading platform and to Reuters RMDS, TIB and Triarch market data systems, according to a news release. Adapters also can be started, paused and stopped independently of its associated StreamBase application, without interrupting its data flow.

The company's Eclipse-based development environment also includes improvements to the Java toolkit, including template wizards and automatic code generation. In addition to Solaris 10 and Windows, the platform now also supports Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 or higher; 64-bit support has been extended on Red Hat Linux 4. The company also has beefed up the documentation on its StreamBase Developer Zone.
