CA Sheds Ingres Business, Not Database

December 1, 2005 —  Computer Associates has sold its Ingres relational database technology to the private equity firm Garnett & Helfrich Capital for an undisclosed sum. The firm, in turn, has formed a new company, Ingres Corp., to continue development of the venerable database.

However, sale of the database doesn’t end CA’s use of the technology. Many CA products use Ingres as the underlying database technology, including the company’s flagship Unicenter product line. CA plans to continue using Ingres in its products and retains a minority ownership stake in the new corporation.

Mark Barrenchea, CA’s chief technology architect and head of technology strategy, will hold a seat on the Ingres board. Garnett & Helfrich Capital’s managing director, Terry Garnett, will serve as interim CEO and chairman of Ingres Corp.

The decision to sell came as part of a streamlining of CA’s product line and the desire to put the database in the hands of someone who could best sell the product. “We are not focused on the database market; we are focused on management and security,” said Yogesh Gupta, CTO at CA. “We felt that a stand-alone company focused on the open-source database market could do a much better job in promoting the product.”

CA acquired the database in 1994 with the acquisition of software developer ASK/Ingres. CA released Ingres as an open-source project in 2004, which generated some interest in the software.
