Shunra shows off application analysis package

August 14, 2008 —  Testing company Shunra Software has created a testing package that uses a mix of automated and manual time tracking to pinpoint business transaction bottlenecks for analysis purposes.

The VE Application Performance Analysis Package, released Tuesday, tests applications in a “real world” environment and identifies business transactions with performance issues—such as extended transaction response times, network bandwidth bottlenecks and client or server delays—to analyze how the problems might be mended, the company said.

Shunra’s product lets users manually track transaction time, or automate timing via integration with third-party test tools such as Hewlett-Packard’s LoadRunner or Borland’s SilkPerformer. When a test is completed, it can individualize every application action, or “turn,” in a transaction to isolate delays and bottlenecks, the company said. For tests involving transmission control protocol (TCP) data, the Shunra package will analyze the packet data to determine the effects of the TCP window size on transaction performance.

Automated packet captures are recorded as a test is running to provide data for the post-test analysis. Automated analysis tools yield information on the behavior of a transaction based on its packet flows. This capability can reduce problem discovery time from weeks to hours, Shunra claimed.

The VE Application Performance Analysis Package is offered in a desktop enterprise version or as an add-on to Shunra’s Virtual Enterprise network simulation suite. It includes four main components, which can be used individually or in tandem: WAN emulation, transaction timing, packet capture and the VE Analyzer.

David Berg, a product manager with Shunra, said users who don’t want to tap the product’s analysis capabilities could still integrate WAN emulation into the testing process. “One specific example is for customers using HP’s LoadRunner to test their application performance,” Berg said. “By adding WAN emulation to their test environment, they can understand the true application response times at their remote sites.”

When asked what makes the VE Application Performance Analysis Package different from other testing tools, Berg said other products currently offering application analysis typically produce more data, but at a cost. “Using other solutions takes highly trained staff days or weeks to generate the same analysis,” he claimed. “Other solutions may provide more data, but Shunra provides the highest-value data in a fraction of the time.”

He added that VE Application Performance Analysis Package is highly automated and requires less than a day of training to understand.
