Pentaho release focuses on embedded business intel

August 31, 2009 —  Open-source software maker Pentaho has begun to distribute a new version of its business intelligence suite that makes it easier for developers to embed applications, according to the company.

Pentaho BI Suite Version 3.5, released today, has an updated report designer that uses a unified file format that contains all resources, layouts and components required to render a report.

"It provides a standard process for formatting reports. It can be done without switching between interfaces," said Lance Walter, senior vice president of marketing. The reporting capability can be integrated into business applications because it is delivered as a set of Java libraries, he added.

Organizations that want to integrate a bit of business intelligence functionality into their applications without building out reporting capabilities can just "plug in" the libraries, he said. The libraries are available under the GNU Lesser General Public License, which does not have a reciprocal distribution provision.

The suite also features new self-service capabilities to allow end users to create charts and other business intelligence content for their dashboards. A chart designer lets end users select chart types and lay out fields from business categories without being concerned with SQL, said product marketing manager Jared Cornelius.

A data grid component can be populated with query results, restyled and sorted by end users.

The company is offering two new programs for developers to embed its software with: a paid technology guidance and support service called Pentaho Reporting Embedded Edition, and a flat-rate pricing regiment that grants users unlimited, royalty free use of Pentaho for US$10,000, without per-user or per-CPU fees. The guidance and support service follows the same pricing.

Pentaho’s flat-rate "Escape" program offers conversion from Actuate e.Reports, Brio, Cognos Impromptu, Crystal Reports and Oracle Reports, according to the company.
