Microsoft reveals next-gen Windows Embedded

July 15, 2008 —  Microsoft took time during the developers’ week of Tech·Ed North America 2008 to announce the immediate availability of a preview version of Windows Embedded Standard 2009. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) would have it by year’s end, the company said, for the building of kiosks, point-of-sale systems and thin clients.

Unveiled early last month, the next version of Windows XP Embedded not only gets a new name but a feature refresh to boot. Included are version 3.5 of the .NET Framework, Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1, Silverlight support and componentized drivers for Intel’s latest x86 processors (including the new Atom line).

Although it isn’t labeled an embedded version of Windows Vista, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 does offer Network Access Protection. That enables what the company called “seamless” connection to PCs running Windows Vista, in addition to the management and security features of Windows Server 2008.

What’s more, the community technology preview of Windows Embedded Standard 2009 includes Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Media Player 11, allowing OEMs to deliver media experiences, rich Internet applications and user interface design, Microsoft said.
