iRise, Ravenflow add visuals to Requirements Composer

December 12, 2008 —  Two companies are riding shotgun with IBM’s release of its Requirements Composer requirements definition product. iRise and Ravenflow have brought out products of their own that complement Requirements Composer with visual capabilities. iRise’s Connect visualization software lets developers experiment with requirement scenarios, while a new version of Ravenflow’s Raven requirements definition software automatically generates visual models from use cases.

iRise Connect, released earlier this month, gives developers the ability to embed live software prototype visualizations into Requirements Composer with its SmartView wrapper technology. The developer can interact with the visualizations to experiment through requirements scenarios within IBM’s new tool. The visualizations are published in real time and can be linked into requirements artifacts, which iRise executives said can be important in helping developers determine what to build.

“Think of visualizations the same way you might think of 3D simulations of airplanes, cars or buildings,” said Mitch Bishop, iRise’s chief marketing officer. “Only this time you're experiencing proposed software before it is built.”

Bishop added that visualizations act like the final application, so developers and business stakeholders can offer feedback early in the software life cycle.

In a similar vein, Ravenflow’s new version of Raven, also released earlier this month, adds visual validation to Requirements Composer, according to Ravenflow executives. Using Requirements Composer, developers and analysts can select requirements and automatically generate visual models from use cases. A feature called Specification Checker in Raven can find the most common missing requirements in software specifications. Some of those might include process flow gaps, missing alternative flows and unspecified data transfers.

“Missing requirements are the most common cause of software project delays and cancellations,” said Adam Frankl, Ravenflow’s vice president of marketing.

Raven 5.0 parses English text and generates visual models and specification documents, which can be viewed and understood by non-technical stakeholders. Additionally, it integrates with IBM's Telelogic Doors for requirements management of advanced systems and software development, the company said.

IBM Requirements Composer is a Jazz-based requirements definition platform released earlier this month. It takes IBM's requirements solution a step earlier in the life cycle than the company’s RequisitePro requirements manager, as it helps software developers draft and define requirements from the start. IBM executives said Requirements Composer reduces paper consumption by digitizing diagrams and putting requirements into storyboards that can be viewed on the Web.
