Fedora 10 RPM can install system components on the fly

November 25, 2008 —  Red Hat's other Linux-based operating system turned its version numbers over to double digits today. Fedora 10 introduces a host of changes, fixes and additions, but for developers, the most significant changes may lie with the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM). That package management system got its first significant revision in some time, and it can now stream down components needed to run already installed software.

Paul Frields, Fedora project leader, said that these RPM changes allow media players to pull down the codecs needed to interpret audio and video files. In future updates to the operating system, these capabilities will expand to other areas of the system, such as fonts.

“This is the first step for a bigger road map for Fedora 11 and beyond,” said Frields. “Open a document without the right fonts installed, and that will be taken care of automatically. Open a data file you don't have the right application for, [and] it will be able to provide that application.”

In this release, only audio and video codecs function with the new RPM on-the-fly installation.

“The only modification [developers] will need to make is a rebuild against the new RPM libraries,” said Frields. “Just update your libraries, rebuild your package and republish it.”

Elsewhere in this release are updates to the KVM virtualization project. These modifications make it easier to run Fedora in a virtualized environment, and Frields said that they make installation less time consuming.

“One of the things we've done is increased the capabilities for remote installation and management. We've got changes that are in not just the virtualization management side, but also in the scriptability and configurability of a remote installation, which can be done entirely hands off,” said Frields.

Fedora 10 is free and available online at fedoraproject.org.

Fedora 10 Package Manager is great and installs beautifully. Unfortunately where is the question, I downloaded and installed Wine, all went as it should but when done Wine is nowhere to be found. It must be magic!
