Eclipse BIRT gains data warehousing

September 17, 2009 —  The Eclipse Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) project had data visualization tools but was missing an open-source data warehouse component—until now. BIRT co-creator Actuate announced on Sept. 15 that it had teamed up with Infobright to deliver a joint solution for enterprises.

The BIRT project began nearly five years ago at the behest of the Eclipse Foundation. It enables developers to integrate business intelligence into Java EE applications.

Infobright belongs to the Actuate BIRT Global Partner Connection, a program established to create business opportunities for BIRT. The company is a strategic partner.

The joint solution, called Infobright & Actuate Virtual Machine, leverages Infobright database technology to enable developers to make queries against large volumes of data. Infobright scales to 50TB of data on a single server and uses data compression to reduce storage requirements.

Developers can produce reports and create data visualizations using BIRT's WYSIWYG report designers.
