Coverity provides code intelligence for Java

August 11, 2008 —  A code analysis tool maker has developed a solution that lets software development managers assess code readiness so that they may leave as little room for error as possible before releasing software.

Coverity Software Readiness Manager, which became available today, provides code intelligence about key readiness factors such as architectural integrity, code complexity, interdependencies, test coverage and violation of Java best practices, the company said.

The solution aggregates data from multiple sources and tools, and correlates those results into a dashboard display that drills down from the product to the package level.

Code intelligence permits development managers to predict how many support issues there may be when software is released, said Coverity CTO Ben Chelf. “[Managers] drill down in the product to see where risk is coming from,” he said. "They can then can allocate the right team and show them, ‘This code is risky; you’d better go fix that.’ ”

To deliver those results, Readiness Manager collects 28 metrics, including coupling, commenting, cyclomatic complexity, entropy, Halstead metrics, lines of code and similar code blocks, according to the company.

Thresholds for the dashboard’s indices are determined by industry standards, but may be configured to fit the code base it is analyzing, said Chelf. It also integrates with Coverity Prevent, a static analysis tool offered by the company.

Readiness Manager generates custom PDF reports to supply different audiences with remediation recommendations.

Coverity will create integrations for third-party products and will add more data sources based on customer feedback, he added. Language coverage will extend to C/C++ in a later version of Readiness Manager.

Pricing begins at US$8,750 and follows a staggered per line of code/per year model. Readiness Manager is based on technology that Coverity acquired from Solidware earlier this year.
