BigLever builds a bridge to SCM with Gears

November 17, 2008 —  To advance software product lines, it's important for organizations to manage those lines both over time and in the space of the product portfolio. BigLever Software today released its Gears Universal Configuration Management Bridge, which enables CM systems to integrate with the Gears SPL Lifecycle Framework.

Gears is a framework for managing multiple products and their variations. Originally designed to handle source code, the CM Bridge will enable users to manage a full set of software artifacts across the life cycle, according to Charles Krueger, CEO of BigLever. "The bridge replaces a series of manual steps. There was a lot of jumping back and forth between Gears and the CM system. We've basically automated all of that," Krueger said.

After integrating in 2007 Gears with IBM's Telelogic Rhapsody modeling tool—a favorite of developers working on embedded systems—BigLever created the new bridge to link Gears to IBM Rational's ClearCase CM tool. Software product line development, Krueger said, "will be a strategic initiative at Rational." The former Telelogic tools are now part of IBM's Rational Software area, since the acquisition earlier this year has been completed.

The bridge also lets Gears integrate seamlessly with CVS, Perforce, Subversion and Telelogic Synergy CM systems, Krueger said.
