MySQL 5.1 claims 15% performance boost

April 15, 2008 —
SANTA CLARA — Sun Microsystems, at the first MySQL Conference and Expo since it acquired the open-source database company, introduced MySQL 5.1 today.

The upgrade, to be generally available later this quarter, offers improvements in a number of areas, Sun claimed in a news release.

The upgrade supports five forms of table and index data partitioning, enabling what the company called faster query response times by scanning only the relevant partitions of data that need to be scanned instead of the entire table or index.

Two new data replication options—row-based and hybrid—offer what are assuredly more efficient and safer replication schemes for the application. A new event scheduler tool has been added to automatically schedule common recurring SQL-based tasks. And, for MySQL Enterprise subscribers, a new upgrade advisor warns about specific bugs that might affect their systems and recommends how to upgrade their database servers to correct the problem.

“Basically, it’s got a 15% performance gain, based on benchmarks, compared to older versions of 5.0,” said Zack Urlocker, executive vice president of products for MySQL, which was acquired by Sun earlier this year for US$1 billion.

About 2,000 attendees are expected at the MySQL conference.
